Well the problem is chicken or egg: do teenagers put in juvenile detention centers get there because they have a mental disorder? or do they acquire a mental disorder by being there? i am not sure that pathologizing them is the answer since it adds mental patient to their resume of criminal--TWO stigmas for them to fight. I'm not denying the reality of mental illness... obviously many teens have it. But giving 2/3 of delinquents that label obviously doesn't help. Especially if the solution is just going to be making them eligible for a dope pill. Was this answer helpful?
